FREE CONCERTS HEATING UP THE LONG, HOT SUMMER.

It's as certain as three-digit temperatures in August -- summer in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  means free music performed in museum courtyards, on seaside piers, in shopping malls, among downtown's financial canyons, in parks and along city sidewalks.

This is that time of year when a town indisputably linked to the music business lives up to its billing. There's pop, country, international, swing, hip-hop, rock and classical on offer in gathering spots in every corner of the county -- at no charge.

Here, then, is our annual free summer concerts survey with profiles of three not-to-be-missed acts, and selected tips from some of the town's top outdoor music programs.
