FRED MEYER: THE STORE WITH THE MOST SANTAS

SEATTLE, Nov. 27 ~PRNewswire~ -- A local photography company and Fred Meyer said today they are bringing Santa Claus to more stores in the Puget Sound area than any other retail chain.
"Our project is the largest Santa photo shoot ever attempted in the state of Washington," Steve Nichols, the owner of Kent-based Steve Nichols Photography, said. "We are bringing area residents the convenience of more Santas in more places closer to where more people live than has ever been done before in this area."
Santas will be available to visit with children at 17 Fred Meyer stores stretching from Everett in the north to Lacey in the south, and from Bremerton eastward to the new Fred Meyer store that opened earlier this month in Yakima.
"We've created 57 jobs with this project," Nichols said. "Each of the 17 stores will have a Santa, a Santa's helper and a photographer. Starting Nov. 27, they will be there every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the first three weekends after Thanksgiving, and then will be there every day from Dec. 18 through 23. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. Photo packages range from $9.95 to $49.95."
Nichols started the project in August with market research that led to the selection of Fred Meyer. "We picked Fred Meyer because it offered the greatest number of convenient locations, it has a very positive family image, and its unique one-stop-shopping concept is a great draw. Also, I like to shop there," Nichols said.
"Next, we lined up the photographers, and in early November we began interviewing for Santas and their helpers," Nichols said. "We had a wealth of applications generated by ads and networking with such organizations as Rotary, the American Association of Retired Persons and DECA (Distribution Education Clubs of America) at local high schools. An interesting development was that we had a number of women applicants who were so impressive that we broke with tradition and hired five of them to be Santas."
Nichols is a native of Seattle and has been a professional photographer since 1968. Recent clients include Nordstrom, JC Penney, Gottschalks, Lancome Cosmetics, Erno Laszlo, Paul Mitchell, Lancaster Cosmetics and Estee Lauder.
