FRANK POPOFF OF THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY TO RECEIVE INTERNATIONAL PALLADIUM MEDAL

NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Section of the Societe de Chimie Industrielle has announced that Frank Popoff, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), will be awarded its 1994 International Palladium Medal. Mr. Popoff will receive the medal at a dinner in his honor at The Plaza Hotel in New York City on May 18, 1994.
The prestigious award, established in 1958, is presented by the Section every two years to recognize superior contributions to the world chemical industry.
"Frank Popoff has played a key role on the world chemical scene for many years, and his many distinguished contributions fit well with the aims and objectives of our parent organization in Paris," said Paul Copp, president of the American Section. "He has long championed the global view, and he was an obvious choice for our 1994 award."
The Societe de Chimie Industrielle, whose American Section will honor Mr. Popoff, is a French organization founded in 1917 to advance application of scientific and engineering developments in the chemical industry. The American Section was established in New York City in 1918 through the efforts of an American chemist, Jerome Alexander, and the section's first president, Leo Baekeland, inventor of Bakelite, the first synthetic resin.
Popoff will join the ranks of 17 other eminent world chemical industry representatives from Belgium, England, France, Germany and the U.S.A. who have received the International Palladium Medal over the past 35 years.
Popoff, who earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and an MBA from Indiana University, joined Dow in 1959 in Midland, Mich., world headquarters of the company. After an initial assignment in technical service and development, he served in a variety of sales, marketing and business management positions, including assignments in the U.S. and Europe, where he served as President of Dow Europe, 1981-85. He was named CEO of The Dow Chemical Company in 1987 and Chairman in 1992.
Popoff is a past Chairman of the Chemical Manufacturers Association and is a member of the Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Business Roundtable, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Conference Board, the American Chemical Society, and the U.S.-Japan Business Council. He chaired the IIIrd World Forum of the Chemical Industry (sponsored by the Societe de Chimie Industrielle) in Paris in April, 1993.
