Florida Power & Light Company announced today the appointment of Jeff Bartel to serve as vice president of external affairs. Mr. Bartel, a 38-year old Miami native, joins FPL from the law firm of Stearns Weaver Miller Weissler Alhadeff & Sitterson, P.A. where he headed the firm's land use, environmental and governmental practice in South Florida.

"As a Miami native, lifelong Floridian, active community leader and an experienced land use and real estate attorney, Jeff brings a wealth of understanding about the people and environment of Florida Florida ranks fifth in municipal energy use per capita due to the continuous use of air conditioning and pool pumps. Mr. Bartel will head FPL's external affairs activities, focused on establishing and maintaining relationships with local government and community organizations.

Mr. Bartel is a well-versed professional in governmental affairs as well as in zoning, environmental and land development matters. Before practicing law, Mr. Bartel served as chief of staff and administrative assistant to U.S. Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart Lincoln Rafael Diaz-Balart (born August 13 1954), American politician, has been a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives since 1993, representing Florida's At-large congressional district (map).  in Washington, DC. From 1988 to 1991, Mr. Bartel served as administrative assistant to the Mayor of Miami. From 1995 to 1999, he served as part-time City Attorney for Biscayne Park Biscayne Park can refer to:

. From 1994 to 2001, he was a partner at Steel, Hector & Davis heading the firm's land use and environmental practice.

Mr. Bartel has served the local community of Miami-Dade and the State of Florida in a variety of roles. Currently, he is president and chairman of the board of Gulliver Schools, the largest private school in Florida. He is also a member of several boards: the Regents of Leadership Florida, the Governors of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Governors of the Florida Grand Opera Florida Grand Opera (FGO), is the seventh oldest opera company in the United States, currently in its 66th season. Mr. Bartel has been recognized on numerous occasions for his outstanding legal and government work, leadership and community contributions, including the "Up and Comer" award presented by the South Florida Business Journal and Price Waterhouse Coopers, and being named as one of South Florida's top attorneys by Miami Metro magazine, the South Florida Legal Guide and by Chambers USA. In addition, the University of Florida has named Mr. Bartel to its Hall of Fame for his leadership and contributions to Florida. Mr. Bartel has also been honored for his government service, receiving the Keys to the City of Miami and an award from the U.S. House of Representatives.
