FPL Joins Employees and Customers to Help Hurricane Victims; Hurricane Relief Effort Exceeds $1 Million.

, Fla. -- Florida Power & Light Company announced that a joint effort with its customers and employees to help Floridians affected by this season's hurricanes, has reached the $1 million mark with an additional commitment of $275,000 FPL made today.

"From the beginning of this unprecedented string of four hurricanes, FPL made a commitment to restore power and to help restore the lives of those affected by these storms," Armando Olivera, president of FPL said. "We are delighted that in partnership with our customers and employees, we will give further assistance to those Floridians who lost so much to the hurricanes."

 the Southwest coast of Florida in mid-August, FPL established a relief fund in cooperation with the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  that matched FPL employees and customers' donations dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000. The generosity of employees and customers was overwhelming and the campaign netted nearly $725,000 for the Red Cross and, ultimately, those Floridians in need.

Since Charley, Floridians have endured Hurricanes Frances, Ivan and Jeanne. The $275,000 committed will be donated to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund. It was established in 1994 by the Florida Legislature to administer grants under the National and Community Service Trust  Foundation.

To further help support the needs of those affected by these storms, FPL will match its customers' contribution to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund. Starting with this month's billing cycle Billing cycle

, FPL customers can contribute to the Hurricane Relief Fund by filling in the amount they would like to donate in the space provided in the upper right hand side of their FPL bill and adding the contribution amount to their monthly payment. FPL will match the contribution, up to $275,000, and forward to the Florida Hurricane Relief Fund all contributions received.

Donations are tax deductible and will only be used for the relief efforts to assist hurricane victims. The Volunteer Florida Foundation will issue a report on donations accepted and funds distributed in six months and every six months thereafter until the fund is no longer needed.

"We are delighted that we have been able to join with our customers and employees to provide support to two worthy non-profit organizations that are providing much-needed support to Floridians affected by the hurricanes," Olivera said.
