FPL Crews Rapidly Restoring Affected Areas and Prepared to Respond as Fay Continues Path Through Florida.

JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- Florida Power & Light Company's crews worked through the night to continue to restore service disrupted by Fay while preparing resources to respond as the storm moves into new areas.

Outages have been widely scattered, caused by high winds, debris, trees and limbs blowing into lines, and flooding, for example. Here is the status of restoration:

* Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties have been essentially restored.

* The Treasure Coast and the west coast counties served by FPL will be essentially restored by the end of the day.

* The company will continue working to restore power between storm bands in Brevard County and is making significant progress. Completion of restoration is dependent on changing weather conditions which may delay restoring service to all customers in this area today.

With the current forecasted northwesterly path of the storm, the company is prepared, should it become necessary, to augment existing crews with an additional 1,000 restoration personnel into the areas north of Volusia County.

"We know how hard it is to manage without power, and we will restore service as quickly as safety permits. We'll be on the job 24/7 until our customers are back to normal," said FPL Director of Customer Support Irene White.

Customers Asked to Report Outages

As FPL's crews continue to restore power, some customers may find themselves still without service even though their neighbors have electricity. These customers may be experiencing a more localized problem with their electric service and should contact FPL to report the outage through FPL's automated system (1-800-4-OUTAGE). Using the FPL account number or their phone number, customers can quickly report their outage. Customers with internet access can also report their outage at www.FPL.com.

Safety is FPL's First Priority

FPL advises its customers to follow the advice of their local emergency management officials and visit www.FPL.com for more information on storm safety. The company offers the following tips:

* Customers using a portable generator should check the manufacturer's recommendations and follow them for proper use. If your plan includes operating a portable generator, wait until the storm has passed and be sure to set it up outside and connect appliances directly to it. Please do not wire your generator directly to your breaker or fuse box, because the power you generate may flow back into power lines and cause injuries. Only a licensed electrician should connect a generator to a main electrical panel. Never operate a generator inside your home or even in the garage, and keep generators well away from open windows so exhaust does not enter your home or a neighbor's home.

* Stay far away from downed power lines, flooding and debris. Don't walk in standing water and don't venture out in the dark because you might not see a downed power line that could be energized and dangerous. If you see a downed power line, call 911 or call FPL at 1-800-4-OUTAGE.
