FOX TO RELEASE 'GAHAN WILSON'S DINER'
LOS ANGELES, July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Twentieth Century Fox will release the animated short subject "Gahan Wilson's Diner" in Los Angeles only with Fox's romantic comedy "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" today (July 31) for Academy Award consideration. The six-minute short, which was written and designed by cartoonist Gahan Wilson, will go into wide release next year with the comedy "Hideous Mutant Freekz."
"Gahan Wilson's Diner" is produced by Marvel Productions Ltd., with Joe Taritero and Rick Ungar serving as executive producers for Marvel. The co-executive producers are Gene Kraft and Paul Winters. The animation is directed by Karen Peterson and Graham Morris, with voice direction by Stu Rosen. Hamilton Camp, Walker Edminston and Rob Paulsen supplied the characters' voices. The music is by Alan Silvestri.
Roger Birnbaum, president, World-wide Production, Twentieth Century Fox, commented: "We had a deal with Marvel to develop an animated short, and when we learned that they had a deal with Gahan Wilson, we saw a chance to bring to the big screen what so many of us had appreciated in his work as a cartoonist. We expected an innovative, refreshing, albeit slightly macabre short, and we are delighted with the results."
Best known for the macabre humor of his monthly cartoons in Playboy and The New Yorker, Wilson is also the author of "Nuts," a comic strip about the terrors of childhood published in The National Lampoon. "This is the first Gahan Wilson film ever produced," explains the film's co-executive producer Kraft, "and it truly brings to life Gahan Wilson's vision and his art. For the first time audiences will have a chance to see his dark humor and unique style in a movie."
"Gahan Wilson's Diner" is also the first animated cartoon made for theatrical release in which the look and feel of traditional cel animation was achieved completely through computer animation. Animation production for the short was done by American Film Technologies Inc.
Twentieth Century Fox is primarily engaged in the financing, development, production, distribution and marketing of motion pictures throughout the world and is a unit of Fox Inc.
