Valencia, which won its first league title last season and finished 10th in the Southern Section final at Los Posas Country Club in Camarillo, opened this season ranked No. 1 by the Daily News. Their 9-0 start included a five-stroke nonleague victory over Hart, then ranked eighth. The Indians roared back to win the first two league tournaments - both teams broke the Vista Valencia course record last week - climbing into position to clinch Clinch, river, c.300 mi (480 km) long, formed by the junction of two forks in SW Va., and flowing generally SW across E Tenn. to the Tennessee River at Kingston. their fourth league title in seven seasons. All they need to do is finish one stroke ahead of Valencia in any of the three remaining league matches. Valencia, which outscored Hart 226-231 in a Sept. 20 nonleague match at Valencia Country Club, finished second to the Indians in a 183-185 league opener at El Cariso and was second again last week (184-185) at Vista Valencia. Both scores bettered Saugus' course-record 187, set in 2003. The first round will be combined with the Oct. 24 final team match at Knollwood. Top scorers advance to a second round, Oct. 26 at De Bell. --Strong showing: In addition to the 2-3 finish by Valencia and Hart at the Magnolia Park Optimist Club tournament - Torrance was first at 160 - the Foothill League also received a ninth-place finish from Saugus (199). Wohlfeiler (44), Tiara Wells (50), Wynne Shatkus (52) and Ashley Gonzales (53) paced Saugus. Loy and Tayo shot 41s and Mannix and Kim 44s for Valencia. Harp and Tan led Tan Le is an Australian telecommunications entrepreneur, businesswoman and the 1998 Young Australian of the Year. Born in Vietnam, Tan migrated to Australia as refugee with her family in 1982.
