FOUR TOP-25 TEAMS, COACH BILL WALSH FEATURED
AS RAYCOM TELECASTS DISNEYLAND PIGSKIN AND KICKOFF CLASSICS
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Raycom, the nation's leading independent sports programmer, kicks off the 1992 college football season with national telecasts of the Disneyland Pigskin Classic and the Kickoff Classic, games that feature four pre-season Top-25 teams, including national championship contender Texas A&M, and the return of legendary coach Bill Walsh to college football.
Reaching 85 percent of the country with the telecast of each game, Raycom will televise the Disneyland Pigskin Classic live from Anaheim (Calif.) Stadium Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 9 p.m. EDT when the second- ranked Texas A&M Aggies meet 17th-ranked Stanford. Raycom's exclusive coverage of the Kickoff Classic features 14th-ranked Iowa against 25th-ranked N.C. State in an Aug. 29 battle starting at 9 p.m. EDT in Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
Televised by Raycom over a nationally syndicated network for the third-straight year, the Disneyland Pigskin Classic marks the return of Walsh, former coach of the four-time Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers, who now heads the Stanford program. Before joining the 49ers in 1979, Walsh coached at Stanford for two seasons.
"Stanford is the only place where I could have returned to coaching. This is my bliss. I'm excited and pleased to be back at Stanford University. I'm looking forward to the challenge of coaching in the Pac-10, where I think Stanford should be a very solid contender this season," said Walsh, who gave up his position as NBC-TV's top pro football analyst to return to Stanford.
Besides welcoming one of America's most talented coaches, the Disneyland Pigskin Classic will showcase two of the nation's best tailbacks, A&M's Greg Hill and Stanford Heisman Trophy candidate Glyn Milburn.
Hill, perhaps college football's top freshman last year, rushed for 1,216 yards, the 10th best performance by a rookie in NCAA history. Averaging 5.1 yards a carry, he led Texas A&M to the Southwest Conference title and a 10-2 record.
The nation's best all-purpose runner, Milburn did everything for the Cardinal in 1991. The senior from Santa Monica, Calif., rushed for 598 yards and three touchdowns. An excellent receiver in the open field, he caught 40 passes for 454 yards and three touchdowns. Milburn also returned punts and kickoffs, averaging 9.3 yards a return on punts and 23.0 yards a return on kickoffs.
While the Disneyland Pigskin Classic will provide offensive fireworks, the 10th annual Kickoff Classic features two teams that boast top defensive players.
Led by pre-season All-Big Ten pick Mike Wells, Iowa has one of the nation's strongest defensive lines. Despite the loss of three starters in the secondary, the Hawkeyes again look to hold opponents to 14 points a game as they did in 1991, when they went 10-1-1.
Coming off a school-record nine wins and its fifth post-season bowl appearance in the last six years, N.C. State features two pre-season All-America picks in strong safety Mike Reid and cornerback Sebastian Savage. Called the hardest hitting defensive back in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Reid finished 1991 with 83 tackles, third highest on the Wolfpack squad. A 1991 honorable mention All-America selection, Savage placed second in the ACC with five interceptions.
Beginning with the telecasts of the Disneyland Pigskin Classic and the Kickoff Classic, Raycom kicks off a schedule of live sports telecasts that will flood the nation's airwaves and reach almost every major television market throughout the college sports year.
Headquartered in Charlotte with offices in New York, Chicago and Dallas, Raycom annually produces and televises more than 500 sporting events and related studio shows. Football telecasts include Houston Oilers pre-season games, Southwest Conference football, the Freedom Bowl and the Blockbuster Bowl, America's newest New Year's Day classic. Created and managed by Raycom Management Group, a division of Raycom, the Blockbuster Bowl will be televised nationally on CBS Jan. 1 at 1:30 p.m. EST. Penn State, ranked third in pre-season polls, has already agreed to play in the bowl, which is held in Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium.
This past year, Raycom produced and televised a record-number 413 college basketball games, including an unprecedented 26-game schedule on ABC. This year, Raycom will produce 31 games for national distribution over ABC stations. Among its basketball properties are regional networks for the Big Eight, Big Ten, Pac-10, Metro Conference, Southwest Conference and the ACC in association with JP Sports.
