Byline: LEE BARNATHAN Special to the Daily News

His team likes to say he is born to win, so who is Grant of Van Nuys running back Fred Winborn to argue?

And was it any surprise to see Winborn pull off his shoulder pads This article is about football protective equipment. For shoulder pads in fashion, see Shoulder pads (fashion).

With more performances like Friday night's, Winborn might see his legend grow, even as his rushing totals decrease.

All he did in his team's 33-14 nonleague victory over host El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Winborn rushed 17 times for 138 yards, which is less than the 147 he had last week against Monroe of North Hills and way behind the 229 he got in Week Zero against Roosevelt of East Los Angeles East Los Angeles, uninc. city (1990 pop. 126,379), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a residential suburb of Los Angeles, in an industrial area. Still, with 514 yards in three games, he's going to become more noticed in the coming weeks.

``He's a very special player,'' Grant coach Miguel Gonzalez Miguel Gonzalez (born September 25, 1987 in Miami, Florida) is an American soccer player who plays midfielder for the New England Revolution in Major League Soccer.

and ran untouched the rest of the 95yards needed to score.

``I knew once I hit the corner, I was gone,'' he said.

In the second half, Winborn made his impact felt, rushing half of his team's 14 second-half plays, for 105 yards.

``He kind of gets a feel for the defense,'' Gonzalez said. ``Once he gets a feel for the defense and (its) speed, he's ready.''

Winborn's 34-yard run gave Grant a 19-14 lead after Butler had given the Conquistadores a 14-13 lead with a 2-yard run. His fumble return and second touchdown rush merely padded the score.

Jose Saucedo scored Grant's other touchdown, leaping high to intercept a Glenn Coppola pass one-handed and returning it 19 yards for a score and a 13-7 halfatime lead.

Coppola completed 5 of 10 passes with two interceptions and 61 yards. Butler rushed 16times for 81 yards for the Conquistadores. Grant quarterback Armando Orozco completed 4 of 6 attempts for 29 yards.
