FOUR INTEL PENTIUM III XEON PROCESSORS POWER VA LINUX 4405.VA Linux Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:LNUX), Sunnyvale, Calif., a Linux leader, has introduced the VA Linux 4450 server, offering fast data-processing power in a rack-optimized 4U (7-inch-high) form factor. The VA Linux 4450 is powered by four Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Xeon(TM) processors at 700 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. and is designed specifically to serve as a robust database platform for enterprise databases such as Oracle8i(TM). The 4450 server can also be used for e-commerce sites, application serving, software development, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) An integrated information system that serves all departments within an enterprise. Evolving out of the manufacturing industry, ERP implies the use of packaged software rather than proprietary software written by or for one customer. (enterprise resource planning See ERP. (application, business) Enterprise Resource Planning - (ERP) Any software system designed to support and automate the business processes of medium and large businesses. ), web hosting Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith. and clustering. "From e-business to the enterprise, customers who require fast computing power to analyze and process large amounts of data will benefit from the high performance and reliability of the VA Linux 4450," said Gregg Zehr, vice president of engineering, VA Linux Systems. "Combined with the VA Linux 9008 2U storage enclosure system, the 4450 server provides scalable multi-terabyte support for critical data." The VA Linux 4450 features: -- Fast Performance. The VA Linux 4450 comes with up to four 700 MHz Intel Pentium III The successor to the Pentium II from Intel. Introduced in the spring of 1999 at 500 MHz, the Pentium III architecture was similar to the Pentium II with the addition of 70 new instructions optimized for multimedia (see SSE). Xeon processors -- the fastest Xeon processors available -- at 1MB L2 cache (Level 2 cache) A memory bank built into the CPU chip, packaged within the same module or built on the motherboard. The L2 cache feeds the L1 cache, and its memory is slower than L1 memory. The L2 cache feeds the L1 cache, which feeds the processor. . -- Exceptional I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output Bandwidth. The 4450 features three independent PCI buses, 64-bit PCI card A circuit board that plugs into the computer's PCI bus and contains the control electronics for a peripheral device. Starting in the latter half of the 1990s, PCI became very popular. See PCI. slots, and 66 MHz PCI bus operation for exceptional RAID or Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub. throughput. With Ultra160 SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. drive bays, the VA Linux 4450 can currently be configured with five 36GB hard drives -- for up to 180GB of internal storage -- enabling fast access to that data. -- High Availability and Reliability. With up to five hot-swappable hard drives, three hot-swappable power supplies, and six hot-swappable fans, the VA Linux 4450 server is designed to maximize system uptime by minimizing the impact of individual failures. The VA Linux 4450 also features an extra 5.25" bay for tape drives. Further, the 4450 offers mirroring and RAID 5 support with the selection of up to two RAID cards. -- Cost-Effectiveness. In co-location environments where space is at a premium, the density of the VA Linux 4450 server combined with the 9008 2U storage enclosure system makes these products ideal, cost-effective solutions. -- Build-to-Order Software. VA Linux Systems' standard operating system load (VA Linux 6.2) is officially supported for Oracle 8i. Customers requiring further fine-tuning of the operating system software can take advantage of VA Linux Systems' recently launched Build-to-Order Software Selector (BOSS(TM)), a ground-breaking feature that enables online configuration of the operating system and applications. The VA Linux 4450 also takes advantage of VA Cluster Management software (VACM VACM View-based Access Control Model (SNMP) VACM Vector Averaging Current Meter VACM Virus Alerts for the Common Man VACM Vacuum Assisted Compression Molding (TM)) for remote management of large numbers of systems. -- Quick Access. The VA Linux 4450 server enables tool-less access to the chassis, memory, drive bays, PCI cards, power supply and fans, making it easy to add, remove or replace components. -- Total Linux Coverage. As with all systems from VA Linux, the 4450 server has been tested and configured for optimal Linux compatibility and includes VA's award-winning "Total Linux Coverage (TLC TLC total lung capacity; thin-layer chromatography. TLC abbr. 1. thin-layer chromatography 2. )"(TM) -- comprehensive support and service as a standard feature, with extended service options. -- Professional Consulting Services. For companies requiring additional assistance with Linux-based database implementations, VA Linux Professional Services offers design and installation services for both commercial and Open Source databases, including Oracle(R), MySQL(TM) and PostgreSQL.
