FOUNDATION CHANNELS RECYCLED COMPUTERS TO SCHOOLS.

Byline: Yardena Arar Daily News Staff Writer

Schools participating in NetDay96 will emerge with wiring that links five classrooms and one central location, such as a library or computer lab. But without computers, there is no network.

That's where the La Jolla La Jolla (lə hoi`yə), on the Pacific Ocean, S Calif., an uninc. district within the confines of San Diego; founded 1869. The beautiful ocean beaches, in particular La Jolla shores and Black's Beach, and sea-washed caves attract visitors and , Calif.-based Detwiler Foundation can help. The nonprofit's Computers for Schools program collects used computers, has them refurbished and sometimes upgraded, and gives them to schools that match each donation with two from the community.

The foundation has put 19,000 computers in schools during the past four years, 6,000 of them in 1995, said Diana Detwiler, executive director of the foundation created by her father, financier John Detwiler. The response has been so great that the foundation upped the matching requirement from one to two machines late last year.

," Diana Detwiler said. "It's really important that companies know that there is this pipeline to channel equipment to the schools."

The program has peripheral benefits. Refurbishing and upgrading to at least IBM-compatible 386 standards is performed by students studying to be computer technicians at 52 repair locations - high schools, community colleges, California Youth Authority and Department of Corrections facilities and court schools for at-risk students The term at-risk students is used to describe students who are "at risk" of failing academically, for one or more of any several reasons. The term can be used to describe a wide variety of students, including,
  1. ethnic minorities
  2. academically disadvantaged
.

"There's a big vocational training component in this also," Detwiler said.

For computer donors, there's a tax write-off and the satisfaction of helping California emerge from the school technology cellar cellar

California is 45th among the 50 states in classroom technology, Detwiler said. But if 10 percent of the estimated 1.5 million computers put out of service statewide each year were donated do·nate
