FORMER USDA DEPUTY SECRETARY JOINS CALGENE FRESH BOARD

EVANSTON, Ill., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Fresh Inc. today announced the addition to its Board of Directors of Ann M. Veneman, the former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
"Ann's expertise in U.S. and international agricultural policy will play an important role in our strategy of providing the American public with the choice of a better tasting tomato 52 weeks a year," said Thomas L. Churchwell, President and Chief Executive Officer. "In addition, her experience in working with farm labor experts will be extremely helpful as we establish our year 'round production capabilities in the U.S. and Mexico," said Churchwell.
Veneman brings more than 13 years of domestic and foreign agricultural policy experience to the Calgene Fresh Inc. Board. She is the only woman in the history of the USDA to hold the deputy secretary position, wherein her duties included directing and overseeing the policies of the USDA and its 42 agencies, the Department's nearly $84 billion budget and its 111,000 employees. Prior to assuming the deputy secretary post, Veneman served as associate administrator of the Foreign Agricultural Services. Before her public service career, she was a partner in the law firm of Damrell, Damrell and Nelson in Modesto, Calif.
