FORMER NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR JOINS UNITED HEALTHCARE BOARD

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- United HealthCare Corporation's (NYSE: UNH) board of directors has elected The Honorable Thomas H. Kean, governor of New Jersey from 1982-1990 and president of Drew University, to the board for a term expiring in 1996.
"Tom Kean will bring United HealthCare valuable experience and perspectives on state and national legislative and social issues. We're very pleased to welcome him to our board of directors," said United HealthCare Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William W. McGuire, M.D.
Kean has achieved widespread recognition for his accomplishments both as a governor and an educator. Rated by Newsweek as one of America's five most effective governors, Kean was noted for putting in place economic incentives that helped create 750,000 new jobs, a federally replicated welfare reform program, landmark environmental policies and more than 30 education reforms. Nationally, he delivered the keynote address at the 1988 Republican National Convention, served on the President's Education Policy Advisory Committee and chaired the Education Commission of the States.
Reflecting Kean's success as president of Drew University, that institution was listed by U.S. News & World Report as being among the nation's five "up-and-coming" universities.
Kean is author of The Policies of Inclusion, published by The Free Press. He chairs the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation and serves on the boards of a number of organizations, including the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the National Endowment for Democracy.
Kean will assume the board seat being vacated by Walter F. Mondale, who recently was appointed United States Ambassador to Japan.
