FORMER FIRST AMERICAN AND DOMINION BANK BRANCHES IN VIRGINIA, MARYLAND AND WASHINGTON, D.C. BECOME FIRST UNION OFFICES FRIDAY

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- A total of 202 branch offices formerly operated by First American and Dominion banks in Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C. will become branches of First Union National Bank this Friday, Dec. 10.
First Union will unveil new green-and-white "First Union" signs at branches in Washington, Baltimore, Richmond, Norfolk, Fredericksburg, Va., the Maryland and Virginia suburbs of Washington, and dozens of smaller communities in northern and southeastern Virginia, and in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley region including Winchester and Harrisonburg.
Thursday, Dec. 9, the branches will close early -- at 2 p.m. -- to give employees time to complete operational changes prior to Friday's official conversion.
First Union acquired Dominion in March and First American in June, but branch offices continued to operate under their respective names while First Union converted computer systems and familiarized employees with First Union products and services.
In October, 53 former Dominion branches in southwest Virginia began operating under the First Union name.
First Union operates a total of 193 branches in Virginia, 32 in Maryland and 30 in Washington.
The bank's Virginia, Maryland and Washington branches will be linked by computer to all other First Union offices across the southeast U.S., allowing traveling customers to cash a check, inquire about an account balance or perform other transactions at any First Union branch.
The bank operates 1,300 offices and serves Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina, in addition to Virginia, Maryland and Washington.
