Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Whether or not he was aware of it, this was Allen Adams' climactic moment as an athlete.

Although he wasn't playing, Adams remained in uniform and charted pitches for the team. It was the next to last game of the season.

and Chaffey were tied at 12 with two outs and a runner on third in the bottom of the ninth. Marauders assistant coach Joe Watts, playing a hunch, called timeout. After consulting with head coach Frank Bluma, Watts inserted Adams as a pinch-hitter.

``I said `Let's give Allen a chance.' (Bluma) said he can't even run. I told him, `He'll drive in the winning run,' '' said Watts, now in his fourth season as AVC's head coach.

When his name was called, Adams was shocked.

. I had to find some cleats to put on,'' said Adams, recently hired as an assistant coach with the Marauders.

Watts' premonition was prophetic, as Adams lined a base hit up the middle to score Ken Tatum Kenneth Ray Tatum (born April 25, 1944, in Alexandria, Louisiana) is a retired professional baseball player who played 6 seasons for the California Angels, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball.  with the winning run. The only snag was Adams making the required distance between home plate and first base.

``I knew he couldn't even walk or run to first base. Had the (Chaffey) players known about the injury, they could have thrown Allen out,'' Watts said. ``But when he hit the ball the center fielder just let it go. Allen was hobbling down to first as the players were walking off the field. ``I remember one year our football team didn't have a quarterback and I asked the JV coach who was the smartest leader on the team. It was Allen,'' Watts said.

As a senior in 1986, Adams led the Spirits to a 7-0 start in the Kern Valley game on Halloween night.

``I was stood up and then was cut from the side,'' said Adams, who remained in the game until a second-half injury sent him to the sidelines.

The injury didn't require surgery, but Adams skipped his senior year in basketball and was ineffective during the baseball season. His chance to play at a four-year school now wrecked, Adams attended AVC and spent one year rehabilitating his knee.

In 1988, he returned to the diamond and was making a full recovery from an injury when the knee buckled again, this time while sliding into home plate and colliding with an opposing catcher.
