, with heat index values approaching dangerous levels across the Antelope Valley, in the mountains and in the interior valleys,'' the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees today in the Antelope Valley, and near 100 degrees the rest of the week.

The thunderstorms could deliver hail, high winds and dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning that can trigger electrical outages, as well as cause flooding without warning in mountain and desert washes, forecasters warned.

Weak winds mean that thunderstorms are likely to be slow moving: They will stay over one spot to drop rain at rates of one to two inches an hour, forecasters said.

Areas most vulnerable to flash floods are locations in or below steep mountain terrains, on or below hillsides denuded by recent wildfires, and in normally dry washes in the Antelope Valley, the Weather Service said.

The thunderstorms are being created by a strong upper level ridge of high pressure that is centered near Nevada. The ridge is causing monsoonal moisture to spread northwestward north·west·ward
