FORE SYSTEMS SHIPS WORLD'S FIRST SONET/SDH ATM INTERFACE

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Fore Systems, Inc., the worldwide market leader in ATM LAN products, today announced the general availability of its OC-3c Network Module, SONET/SDH ATM interface, for use with its family of ForeRunner(TM) ATM Switches.
In keeping with its industry leadership position, Fore is the world's first company to deliver ATM SONET/SDH functionality to the marketplace.
Both LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) connections are made possible with the SONET/SDH module. Users can use the modules to connect to other ForeRunner switches, ATM-capable SONET/SDH desktop adapters, ATM-ready hubs and routers, campus backbone muxes, private SONET/SDH links or SONET/SDH services.
The OC-3c Network Module operates at the 155 Mbits/sec speed and conforms to the ATM Forum UNI specifications and Bellcore/CCITT standards. Framing is software selectable and compatible with both the SONET OC-3c and SDH STM-1 standards.
"Users are demanding more and more bandwidth," commented Mark Juliano, director of product marketing. "The SONET/SDH interface provides the highest speed of any technology available today. Furthermore, SONET/SDH technology provides a single, seamless desktop-to-carrier ATM interface."
Up to four interfaces are available on a single, compact network module. A variety of physical media interfaces are available for flexible applications support: (1) multimode fiber for desktop use and campus backbones; (2) short reach singlemode fiber; and (3) long reach singlemode fiber for wide area connectivity. The long reach singlemode fiber module is also available in a two-port module. Pricing for the OC-3c SONET/SDH module starts at $6,995 (U.S.).
The OC-3c Network Module complements the DS-3 100 Mbits/sec UNI, and 140 Mbits/sec TAXI interfaces which are currently available for the ForeRunner ASX-100 and ASX-100 SwitchCluster ATM switch products. This range of interfaces gives Fore Systems the most complete array of ATM interface types on the market.
Headquartered in Pittsburgh, Fore Systems is the worldwide ATM LAN market leader. Fore Systems develops, manufactures and markets ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) LAN products that enable information-intensive organizations to build and manage networks for high-speed data and multimedia applications. To date, Fore Systems has shipped ATM solutions to over 125 customers worldwide, including Fortune 500 companies, computer and communications equipment suppliers, the U.S. government, major universities and domestic and international telecommunications service providers.
