FORE SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES EISA AND MICROCHANNEL ADAPTERS FOR HP, SILICON GRAPHICS AND IBM COMPUTERS; LAYS FOUNDATION FOR PC ATM PRODUCTS

PITTSBURGH, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Fore Systems, Inc., the worldwide market leader in ATM LAN products, today announced the availability of two new additions to its line of ForeRunner(TM) ATM Adapter cards -- the ESA-200 EISAbus and MCA-200 MicroChannel ATM adapters.
Existing ATM adapters from Fore Systems support Sun, Silicon Graphics, DEC, NeXT and VMEbus computers.
The ESA-200 EISAbus ATM adapter is available immediately with initial software drivers for Hewlett Packard 700 series and Silicon Graphics Indigo-2 series workstations. The ESA-200 adapter hardware has also been tested in EISA-based PCs, and will be targeted for use in high-end PCs and servers. Drivers for a number of these platforms will be rolled out over the next 12 months.
The MCA-200 ATM adapter provides support for IBM MicroChannel computers. Initially, AIX drivers will be available for IBM RS6000 computer platforms, with additional MicroChannel platforms being supported in the future.
"Recent advancements in PCs and servers make them capable of saturating the bandwidth of shared media Ethernet and Token Ring LANs," commented Mark Juliano, director of product marketing. "These products lay the foundation for the ATM market for the masses."
Both the ESA-200 and MCA-200 products utilize the Advance Cell Processing Architecture developed by Fore Systems, and used in the existing SBA-200 ATM adapter for Sun SPARCstations. This architecture is based on an embedded Intel i960 RISC processor with special purpose AAL cell-processing and DMA hardware. This architecture provides the highest available throughput, as well as the flexibility to support a wide range of computer platforms.
As with all ForeRunner ATM adapters, the ESA-200 and MCA-200 include software that supports a full range of networking applications including: standard protocol suites that support existing software applications, and applications that use the ForeRunner ATM API (Applications Programming Interface). Furthermore, the adapters support PVCs (Permanent Virtual Circuits), and the Fore Systems' SPANS SVC (Switched Virtual Circuit) signaling protocol which offers customers on- demand call set-up, guaranteed bandwidth reservation, per-connection selection of AAL (types 3/4 or 5), and multicasting.
ESA-200 pricing for HP 700 series and Silicon Graphics' Indigo-2 series workstations starts at $3,495 (U.S.) per adapter in quantities of six. Pricing for PC and server platforms using the ESA-200 hardware will be announced at a later date. MCA-200 pricing, including AIX drivers for the IBM RS6000 product line starts at $3,495 (U.S.) per adapter in quantities of six.
Adapters are currently available with ATM Forum 100 Mbits/sec and 140 Mbits/sec TAXI UNI fiber-optic physical interfaces. Unshielded twisted pair and SONET physical layer interfaces will also be provided.
