FORE AND SPRINT TEAM TO PROVIDE COMPLETE ATM SERVICE OFFERING

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to provide a complete end-to-end ATM service offering, Fore and Sprint have agreed to co-market the Fore Systems' market-leading line of ForeRunner ATM switches.
In a concurrent announcement made today, Sprint has rolled out a comprehensive ATM service, available in 300 Points of Presence (POPs) throughout the United States.
The ForeRunner ATM switches will be available with their complete feature set, to Sprint's customers, including local area connections at 45, 100, 140 and 155 Mbits/sec. DS-3 wide-area network (WAN) interfaces to the Sprint network will be offered today, and SONET OC-3c will be offered when Sprint services include that speed in 1994. Customers can connect any UNI-compliant ATM device to the ForeRunner switch, including ATM-ready desktop computers, servers, routers, bridges, hubs, DSUs or cell multiplexers.
Furthermore, through the use of SVC (Switched Virtual Circuit) tunnelling, customers will be able to take advantage of Fore's ForeThought connection management software in both the local-area campus environment and the wide-area network. The benefits of ForeThought include automatic network configuration and reconfiguration, dynamic topology discovery, and multi-switch SVC connection establishment.
"The Sprint service offering is an essential piece of the ATM puzzle," said Eric Cooper, Fore's president and CEO. "With this ATM offering, the promise of seamless LAN/WAN networking has become a reality."
"This relationship represents Fore's first entree into the WAN market," commented Mark Juliano, Fore's director of product marketing. "The ForeRunner's unique LAN and WAN capabilities make it the ideal solution for access to WAN ATM service."
"Sprint has selected Fore Systems among its key vendors for our ATM service because of their leadership position in the ATM LAN market," said Dom DeAngelo, vice president of Sprint's Data Services Group. "Today's launch of Sprint's ATM service further strengthens our position as an industry leader," continued DeAngelo. "The flexibility we have designed in our complete, end-to-end service and our vendor relationships are contributing factors that position Sprint far ahead of our competitors."
