FORD WINDSTAR -- NEXT GENERATION MINIVAN

DETROIT, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ford Windstar -- which sets new standards in the expanding minivan market -- will be arriving soon in dealerships throughout the United States and Canada.
"Windstar takes design, engineering, manufacturing and comfort standards to levels never before achieved by minivans. It is the next generation minivan -- available today," said Ross H. Roberts, vice- president and general manager, Ford Division.
"Quality is the trademark of the new Ford Windstar," Roberts asserted. "It's quality that customers will be able to see, to touch and to feel -- from the styling, from the fit and finish, from the safety and comfort features, and from the exceptional way in which Windstar drives."
Windstar is the fifth of 14 new products that Ford will bring on line during a record-setting 24-month period that began in May 1993. Ford's competitive strengths will be heightened by Windstar's design, engineering, quality and comfort standards.
 DESIGNED FOR DISTINCTION
Windstar's basic design concept is to shape a vehicle that is car- like in ride, handling, comfort and quietness -- and yet offers the spaciousness, flexibility and utility of the traditional minivan.
Exterior lines present a flowing, aerodynamic shape in which the engine and transmission compartment are linked visually, yet distinctly, with the passenger compartment behind -- a "two box" design that results in a sleek, functional silhouette. Key to this design is Windstar's front-wheel drive, which eliminates the drivetrain tunnel from front to rear, allowing better packaging of the powertrain and increased passenger room and comfort.
Windstar's interior accommodates seven passengers with bucket seats in front, either bucket or bench seats in the middle row and a three- passenger sliding bench seat in the third row. The ergonomic instrument panel is designed to flow around the driver, with all switches and controls within easy reach. Graphics on instruments and switches are bright and easy to read, day or night.
Windstar, with a 121-inch wheelbase and a 64-inch tread, is longer and wider than the current most popular minivan competitor and has up to 144 cu. ft. of cargo capacity. Windstar is available in two series: a well-equipped GL and an upscale LX to cater to customers' range of needs.
 A PROVEN, RELIABLE POWERTRAIN
The heart of Windstar's power system is a 3.8 liter, SEFI V-6 engine, coupled to an electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The powertrain is monitored and controlled by Ford's new generation of electronic engine control -- EEC-V -- both faster and with greater capability than its predecessor, EEC-IV.
Windstar's engine and transmission are based on Lincoln Continental's powertrains. The engine, which has aluminum cylinder heads for lightness and efficiency, generates 155 hp at 4,000 rpm, 220 lb. ft. of torque to provide an effortless combination of good fuel economy, low emissions and smooth performance, regardless of load or terrain.
 A VERY CAR-LIKE, QUIET MINIVAN
Windstar, from the beginning, was designed to have the most "car-like" handling and driving of any minivan on the market. With its independent MacPherson strut front suspension with stabilizer bar, "twist-beam" rear axle with coil springs and gas shocks, and power rack- and-pinion steering, Windstar offers ride and handling similar to that found in upscale automobiles and significantly superior to that offered by typical minivans on the market today.
