FORD TO INCREASE EXPLORER PRODUCTION

LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Customers and dealers eagerly awaiting deliveries of Ford Explorers will be pleased to learn that production of the hot-selling sport utility vehicle will be increased later this year at the Louisville Assembly Plant.
"We have been able to modify the plant's production system to build 500 additional Explorer bodies each week beginning in early December," said Dale McKeehan, general manager of Ford Motor Company's Body and Assembly Operations. "Final assembly of the additional four-door Explorers will be completed in the regular production system the following week."
"Our Louisville employees and the leadership of UAW Local 862 are very aware of the strong demand for Explorers and are working with us to meet the strong customer demand for this product," he said.
The additional weekly production will add 9,500 Explorers to production during the 1994 model year.
Plans to convert the company's St. Louis Assembly Plant to Explorer production, beginning in January 1995, were announced in February.
Production of Explorers through May this year totaled 142,314, up from 133,800 in the first five months of 1992.
Last year, 304,883 Explorers were built at the Louisville Assembly Plant, compared with 282,728 in 1991.
