FORD HOLDS THE LINE ON CALIFORNIA LEASE RATES

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In a bold marketing move targeted at the nation's largest auto state, Ford Motor Company announced today that short-term (24-month) 1994 Red Carpet Lease payments on virtually all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles in California will be at or below present rates for 1993 products.
"Ford Motor Company is the industry leader in leasing in California, and we intend to stay that way," said Ross H. Roberts, Ford vice president and Ford Division general manager, and Lee R. Miskowski, Ford vice president and Lincoln-Mercury Division general manager.
"California accounts for more sales than any other state. We know that exceptional value is especially important for consumers in this market, and we intend to continue as the value leader."
The program will apply to all 1994 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars and trucks. For example, at $249 a month, a well-equipped 1994 Taurus GL (with Preferred Equipment Package 204A) will lease for $30 less than the same car today. This Taurus package accounts for 60 percent of all Taurus sales.
The Mercury Sable GS (with Preferred Equipment Package 451A) is another example; the $259 monthly payment is $40 less than the 1993 Sable with the same options.
Improvements on 1994 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products include air- bag

supplemental restraint systems and other safety features, including Roadside Assistance on all 1994 cars and trucks at no cost to the customer. Driver and passenger-side air bags become standard on most Ford and Lincoln-Mercury cars in 1994, and driver-side air bags are now standard on many Ford trucks.
Ford has six of the top 12 best-selling vehicles in California, including the No. 1 compact utility -- the Ford Explorer, the top middle specialty car -- the Ford Thunderbird, and the top small specialty car -- the Ford Probe.
"As a percentage of retail sales, more Lincolns are leased than any other brand in California," Miskowski said. "Leasing accounts for about 50 percent of all Lincoln retail volume."
Roberts adds that Ford holds about 50 percent of all manufacturer- sponsored truck leases in California. "When it comes to retail leases, the Ford Explorer is leased more frequently than any other truck," he added.
Ford has introduced several value pricing programs in California in recent years, including the "One-Price" Escort and Tracer and the "One- Look" Thunderbird and Cougar. Both were so successful that they have become national programs.
"Today's customers want and deserve a quality product with the safety and convenience features they need -- all at a fair price," Miskowski and Roberts concluded. "This is just the next initiative in Ford's continuing value story in this important market."
Today's announcement for California leases assumes dealer participation in the program and customer down payments equal or lower than those in effect for 1993 Ford vehicles. Consistent with previously announced customer incentive programs, this Red Carpet Lease program is scheduled to run through Jan. 10, 1994.
