FORD ANNOUNCES LOUISVILLE, KY., EXPORT INVESTMENT
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford Motor Company

(NYSE: F) will invest more than $500,000 to establish a new homologation center at the Louisville Assembly Plant to support projected annual exports of more than 6,000 Ford Explorers to Europe, beginning in 1993.
The investment will be used to convert and equip an existing 7,000- square-foot building on the plant site, which will be completed by the end of 1992.
"The Louisville Assembly Plant will be the first Ford assembly plant in the country to have an on-site homologation center to export American-built products to European markets," said Robert P. Sparvero, general manager-export sales for the company's North American Automotive Operations. Homologation refers to vehicle modifications necessary to comply with local rules and regulations.
"Employees will make more than 100 modifications to Ford Explorers to be shipped to Europe to meet the automotive requirements and regulations of the countries in which they are sold.
"An on-site homologation center will help make Ford fully competitive by ensuring superior quality and reducing the cost of products modified for export. This procedure also will make the dealer delivery process more efficient and quicker, because Ford Explorers will have the 'stamp of approval' of meeting the European Community standards when they leave the Louisville facility.
"Ford intends to fully modify our products at our assembly facilities as part of our long-term strategy to expand our export business," said Sparvero.
Les Tischler, Louisville Assembly Plant manager, said, "The employees at this plant are proud to be the first to handle the modification assignment from start to finish. First, we were assigned the Explorer production and now we are being given the added responsibility to support Ford's North American Export Sales efforts to sell it to other parts of the world. We are pleased to have an active role in this major challenge."
The Ford Explorer is presently shipped to Europe, the Middle-East Gulf Cooperative Council countries, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico and Latin America.
"Ford's North American Export Sales division will continue to seek new markets for our products," said Sparvero. "Export sales strengthen our domestic manufacturing base and complement the product line-ups of local Ford companies around the world."
Export production of North American-built Ford cars and trucks in 1991 exceeded its record expectation of 50,000 units, by receiving more than 51,500 production orders. North American Export Sales has 68 direct markets around the world, selling Ford's North American-built products through its more than 170 dealers.
