FOR WHOM THIS BELL TOLLS; SIMI VALLEY STAR HAS PALS AT ROYAL HIGH, WHERE HE ALMOST PLAYED.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

There are many close ties for Simi Valley senior wide receiver Calvin Bell, but his final high school game figures to be just the beginning of an illustrious career.

A major-college prospect, Bell is being courted by USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  and has recruiting trips planned over the next three months to Arizona, Arizona State, Michigan and San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  State. USC and Arizona, however, are Bell's top choices, and he plans to cancel all recruiting trips if either school offers a scholarship.

Playing in the Coliseum for USC has been Bell's vision since he played in the Vikings' youth football program in junior high.

Royal linebackers Kevin Krause and Mike Martin, wide receiver Tyler Williams and running back Randy Plue are among Bell's former teammates. Bell also attended Sequoia Junior High with Highlanders wide receiver Devon Wilson.

They remain close friends and frequently go out together on weekends. Bell even played on the Royal junior varsity junior varsity

``It is always the biggest game for both teams and always a good rivalry,'' Bell said. ``We grew up together and stay in contact. It is kind of sad to be playing in my last high school game, but I know there is a lot more football and years to play. I am just taking it in stride Adv. 1. in stride - without losing equilibrium; "she took all his criticism in stride"

The opportunity to play a full season has been foremost for the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Bell, who has dedicated his senior year to the memory of his grandmother, Elsie Bell. She died of cancer at age 69 in January.

Bell missed the final four games of his junior year after breaking his left ring finger when it got stuck in an opponent's face mask Face mask

Bell has made up for lost time this season. In addition to wide receiver, Bell plays running back and cornerback. He also punts and returns punts and kickoffs. The only time he leaves the field is on extra points.

``It would have been easier if I played one way on offense or defense,'' Bell said. ``I don't have any regrets. It has been a really fun season.''

For the teams, however, it has been anything but enjoyable. Simi Valley (2-6) and Royal (1-8) are tied for fifth in Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. The game has had no bearing on the league championship since 1991, when Royal defeated Simi Valley for the title. Nonetheless, a capacity crowd of more than 10,000 is expected as Royal is gunning for its third consecutive victory over the Pioneers.

``We're all in the same boat,'' 12th-year Royal coach Gene Uebelhardt said. ``It doesn't matter if we're worst or first, it is still the biggest rivalry in Ventura County.''

Uebelhardt is a close acquaintance with the Bell family. He coached Bell's sister, Shannon, a 1995 Royal graduate, on the Highlanders' track team. Last year, Uebelhardt's son, Cody, played with Bell's younger brother Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":

To help promote sportsmanship between the schools, Bell's father, Calvin Sr., organized a combined team banquet with Simi Valley and Royal at Damon's Restaurant on Tuesday. Highlight films of the 1999 season were shown, and a rib-eating contest was held.

``It is a nice affair to get the teams together,'' Bell said. ``Sometimes the parents get nasty, but the players are really good friends.''
