High boys' basketball team took the Long road to the top. The path of Scott Long, that is.

When Long arrived at Chaminade four years ago, he found a mediocre me·di·o·cre

Calling Long the savior of Chaminade basketball could be going a bit far, but the senior forward/guard has definitely been a key piece in the puzzle “Puzzle solving” redirects here. For the concept in Thomas Kuhn's philosophy of science, see normal science.

``This guy's been waiting for this ever since he stepped on the court,'' said Chaminade coach Jeff Young

, who arrived at the school the same year as Long.

Long's performance Saturday was among his best. ``I think my last game like this was my sophomore year,'' he said.

He hit 10 of 13 shots from the field to finish with a game-high 35 points and 11 rebounds, earning player-of-the-game honors.

``I expect that,'' Young said, ``but I didn't think he'd explode (1) To break down an assembly into its component pieces. Contrast with implode.

that way.'' Long's importance to Chaminade (27-1) extends far beyond his statistics, however. The three-year varsity member's leadership on and off the court has been just as valuable. The 6-foot-5 senior, who has committed to the Naval Academy, gladly provides a figure for others to look up to, making it easier for them to relax and realize their potential.

``He's our main leader,'' freshman forward Scott Borchart said. ``He's been like that all year. He's kind of showed me what it's going to be like and what's going to happen. He's been there before. He helps all the other guys on the team, too.''

Long said he is interested in helping the team win any way possible.

``I just wanted to win,'' he said. ``I just thought, `Whoever's on fire today, get them the ball.' I was lucky, it happened to be my game. But it was a team game.''

After Borchart scored the Eagles' first five points, Long took control against the Knights. He had 17 points by the half but did his most damage in the third quarter when he hit a stretch when it seemed as if every time the ball left his hands, it would end up in the basket.

``It's awesome,'' Long said as he reflected on a victory few could have imagined four years ago.
