The soon-to-be junior at Cleveland High will also compete in the 50 and 100 freestyle. ``I was really happy I made the cut,'' Jones said. ``I trained hard in double workouts this summer, and now I've tapered ta·per n. 1. Jones approached the 200 event in a different way, which she says helped her time. ``Normally I pace it and sprint at the end,'' she said. ``This time I just went all out the whole 200 and hoped my workouts helped me to finish strong. At the beginning of the race, I was ahead by a lot. But of course I slowed down because I got tired. But I was able to hold on to the high pace I started with.'' But the team didn't qualify. ``My split (time) was slower than my best time,'' Jones said. ``Everybody was off, so our overall time wasn't the best.'' Still, Jones will be busy over the weekend with her three events. Add Jones: The 200 freestyle might become a common event for Jones during the high school season. Known as a sprinter, Jones set the City Section record in the 50 and 100 freestyle as a freshman, then re-broke her marks as a sophomore. She said competing in the 200 has become a new thing. ``I never thought I'd compete in the 200,'' Jones said. ``I've been thinking about it for the last three or four months when I made time in a junior tournament. Farrell to make trip: Although her times in the 50 and 200 freestyle in Bakersfield weren't great, Maureen Farrell will join her teammate in Minnesota this weekend. Farrell had previously qualified for the Senior Nationals in the 100 and 200 backstroke. ``Hopefully I'll do good in those events,'' said Farrell, a 16-year-old junior at Alemany High. ``I'm a little bit nervous because I'll be swimming against the best. These people are fast.'' |
