Announced at the recent Avon Walk for Breast Cancer The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer is a fundraising effort to support the Avon Foundation in researching a cure for breast cancer.

Participants are required to raise a minimum of $1800 for the cause and over the course of two days walk either 26.2 or 39.3 miles.

``All women over 40 and women with high risk factors for breast cancer should be screened regularly as part of their personal health protection,'' says Dr. Jennifer Hill, medical director of the Antelope Valley Outpatient outpatient /out·pa·tient/ (-pa-shent) a patient who comes to the hospital, clinic, or dispensary for diagnosis and/or treatment but does not occupy a bed.

Through the Antelope Valley Breast Cancer Resource Network, 500 to 600 women will obtain free breast cancer education sessions and participating clinics will perform 1,200 mammograms.

The AVON Foundation grant extends the current program through 2008 and will enable organizers to care for women who have never had an exam and to recall others for annual checks.

``Learning about home self-exams, clinical exams, and mammograms is the best early detection. The earlier a suspicious lump is identified, the greater the survival rate is. There are many more women in Antelope Valley who need to become aware of what they can do to protect themselves,'' Hill said.
