The American Red Cross offers kids the following common-sense safety tips to make this Halloween safe and enjoyable.

--Plan your route and share it with family and friends. If possible, have an adult accompany you.

--Use face paint rather than masks or things that cover the eyes.

--Do not hide or cross the street between parked cars.

--Stay on the sidewalk and use a flashlight to light your way.

--Visit only homes that have porch lights on.

--Keep away from open fires and candles. Costumes can be extremely flammable.

--Accept your treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.

--Be aware of strangers and animals. Costumes and masks can alarm family pets.

--Have a grown-up grown-up

The Auto Club recommends the following Halloween safety tips for motorists.

--Stay alert for children crossing streets at all locations, not just corners and intersections.

--Drive slowly in residential areas.

--Check vehicles' headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals to be sure they are in proper working condition.

--Clean windows and headlights to improve visibility.
