He was expected to be out four months but should be back about three weeks early because he will accept a limited role as the DH. The Angels' medical staff is more concerned about Edmonds reinjuring the shoulder playing defense, where he might run into a wall or dive for a ball. Edmonds, though, needs to be back in a major-league uniform, even if the last two months have lost some meaning following a season-destroying 11-game losing streak. ``I want to play in as many games as I can,'' Edmonds said. ``. . . to prove I can play, to prove my worth to this team. I want to show I'm recovered and can play.'' He was planning to have a memorable year and it's turned into one he'll never forget. Coming back strongly in the season's final two months, he believes, also will show something to those who doubted him, figuring he wouldn't make it back this season. Edmonds hasn't forgotten what some of his teammates said regarding his surgery. There were some players unhappy with Edmonds because they believed he should have had surgery in the offseason instead of waiting until the season began. They questioned his motives for the timing of the surgery, suggesting maybe he didn't want to spend his offseason rehabilitating the shoulder instead of enjoying his free time on the Colorado River Colorado River River, south-central Argentina. Its major headstreams, the Grande and Barrancas rivers, flow southward from the Andes Mountains and meet to form the Colorado near the Chilean border. It flows southeastward across northern Patagonia and the southern Pampas. . ``It was a tremendous lack of knowledge to my situation, it was an unprofessional reaction,'' Edmonds said. ``The guys on the team, what they said . . . they had no idea what I was going through. If I needed surgery in the winter, I wouldn't have hit .420 in spring training.'' Although Edmonds has had shoulder problems in the past, he says the injury that required surgery occurred while lifting weights two days before opening night. ``I wish I was there. I could say, `I'm terrible,' or `I'm having a bad year.' But I feel left out. Everybody has a bad year. Every team, every player . . . just accept it and move ahead.'' Despite all that's happened, Edmonds wants to stay with the Angels. The team is expected to pick up the $4.65 million option it holds for next season. But that wouldn't prevent the Angels from trading Edmonds sometime next year if they felt re-signing him after the 2000 season would be difficult. ``I definitely want to be here,'' Edmonds said. ``I have family here, I have friends here. This is the organization I came up in. I don't want to change. ``But it's a business. They made me realize that in the last year.'' Edmonds, 29, figures he has his best years ahead of him. Just where that will be is the big question. ``I really don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade."
