FOR CSUN, OT SPELLS O-U-T NCAA HOPES CRASH AFTER BIG SKY FALLS ON MATADORS ARIZONA 85, CSUN 81.

Byline: Chris Branam Staff Writer

MISSOULA, Mont. - There was just a little left in the tank, and it belonged to tournament-savvy Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, which was cut by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. .

The Lumberjacks ended the Cal State Northridge men's basketball team's bid for its first Big Sky Conference tournament title with a thrilling 85-81 overtime win Saturday night at Dahlberg Arena Dahlberg Arena is a 7,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Missoula, Montana. The arena, which opened in 1955, is home to the University of Montana Grizzlies and Lady Griz basketball teams. .

Northridge, which has won 20 games for the first time since 1984-85, has never gone to the postseason since moving to Division I in 1990.

The Matadors didn't go down easily against the Lumberjacks. Trailing 81-75 with under a minute left in overtime, Markus Carr was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made all three free throws. He made another shot with 3.4 seconds left to cut the lead to two. NAU made four free throws to provide the final score.

Northern Arizona, playing in its third consecutive Big Sky final, scored the first four points of overtime, but Marco McCain drilled a 3-pointer with two minutes left to cut the lead to one - 74-73.

NAU's Adam Lopez Adam Lopez Costa (referred to as Adam Lopez), (born August 26 in Brisbane, Australia) is a pop musician, opera singer, vocal coach, and session vocalist. He is noted for his ability to produce extremely high notes in his whistle register and for his extensive vocal range, which is , a senior point guard who was a reserve when the Matadors beat the Lumberjacks 69-66 in Northridge in January, came back with a basket while getting fouled. He made the free throw and NAU led 77-73 with one minute left.

Lopez was fouled again with 48 seconds left, and he made both free throws to make it 79-73. But Carr came back with a 17-footer six seconds later to cut the lead to four. Then Lopez made two more free throws and the lead was 81-75.

The episode was directed by Stephen Williams, and written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. It first aired on May 17, 2006 on ABC.  left in regulation, scored nine consecutive points to force overtime; it was the first time since 1978 that the tournament final went an extra period.

The Matadors had a chance to win with three seconds left in regulation, but Carr's running jumper in the lane was off the back of the rim. NAU didn't get off a shot in the final 2.7 seconds.

Northridge used two 3s in the final burst - the first by McCain with 2:11 left and then Andre Larry from the top of the key with 1:35 remaining - to tie the game at 70.

Overtime seemed an unlikely scenario after the first half. The Lumberjacks did what they do best in the game's first 20 minutes - shooting and making 3-pointers. They made 10 of 15 shots from beyond the arc, with Ross Land hitting four.

CSUN couldn't match NAU; the Lumberjacks' shot 58.8 percent from the field in the first half, and the Matadors hit on 43 percent.

It didn't matter from where or how far the Lumberjacks shot. Forget Land's three-quarters-court miracle at the end of the half, sure to be an ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  highlight for the next month. Lopez swished a 3 from 25 feet just 3 1/2 minutes into the second half to make it 49-35.

The 3-pointer tied the tournament record for threes in a game (Weber State had 13 against Nevada in 1988) and Land's long-range shot from the baseline with 10:35 left broke the mark. It also gave the Lumberjacks a 58-45 lead.

In the first half, Lopez's third 3-pointer extended the Lumberjacks' lead to 33-22. NAU led 35-22 before CSUN went on a 7-0 run, capped by Denny Odgen's 3-pointer with 1:15 left in the half.

The score stayed the same until Land's long-distance shot pumped life into the lukewarm fans, who probably found it hard to get excited about a tournament final that didn't involve the host Montana Grizzlies Montana Grizzlies is the name given to the sports teams of the University of Montana. The women's teams use the name Lady Griz. The university is a member of the Big Sky Conference and competes in NCAA Division I, fielding 12 varsity teams. .

This was the fourth meeting for CSUN and NAU in the Big Sky tournament, and the Lumberjacks have won the last three. The Northern Arizona seniors, including Land and 7-foot center Dan McClintock Daniel (Dan) Raymond McClintock (born April 19 1977 in Fountain Valley, California) is an American professional basketball player at the center position.
