FOR BARRYMORE, DIAZ, IT'S AN `ANGELS' WAITING GAME.

Byline: Marilyn Beck & Stacy Jenel Smith

It's a waiting game for Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.

The third member of their big-screen ``Charlie's Angels'' won't be cast until a director for the film is set. The director won't be set until there's a script to everyone's liking.

And several writers already have been at work on the screenplay without reaching such a level.

Producer Len Goldberg and the two angel stars expect the latest draft shortly. Goldberg tells us the plan is to release the movie next summer, and that they've tentatively set a production start of mid-October, ``so, we better get moving.''

We can tell you that the new ``Angels'' will be original - not continuations of those confectionary crime-stoppers played by Farrah Fawcett Farrah Fawcett (born February 2 1947) is an American actress. Barrymore, meanwhile, has been reported as attached to numerous projects lately. But the fact is, some of the supposed involvements can be chalked up to wishful thinking wishful thinking Psychology Dereitic thought that a thing or event should have a specified outcome  on the part of filmmakers.

She does have Penny Marshall's ``Riding in Cars With Boys'' on the horizon - but her commitment right now is to ``Charlie's Angels,'' which she's also co-producing.

And, by the way, as for any new commitment in her personal life, we hear from one close to Drew that she happens to be flying solo at the moment.

It's a jungle out there

Phil Collins fans will just have to be satisfied with his recently released ``Tarzan'' soundtrack and big-band album, ``A Hot Night in Paris.'' He says it'll be awhile before he comes out with a new solo album.

``My manager would like me to make another record, and I'm getting the taste for it again. I've got a couple of new songs, but I'm trying to not rush it and be under pressure.''

Collins, who's committed to promoting ``Tarzan'' through Christmas, says his work on the Disney soundtrack is also the only film work he'll be doing for a while.

The drummer, who's acted in such films as ``Hook,'' ``Frauds'' and ``Buster,'' says, ``I haven't had that door as open as I have before. I don't want to spend too much time away from home. ... I've spent my life away from home.

``But if it was a great project and it wasn't too long, I might think about doing it.''

By any other name ...

Me'Shell Ndegeocello, a critics' darling a few years back with her passionate songs full of strong commentaries on racism, sexism and religious contradictions, is re-emerging in a big way.

And in the fall, she'll either do a solo tour or join Sting on his upcoming tour.

Interestingly, after her 1996 ``Peace Beyond Passion'' album, the singer announced that she intended to change her name. The logic was that it would signal a change in her life - she wanted to do music in some other form, ``maybe just instrumental music.'' And she said she wanted a break from the pressures and controversy surrounding her.

So, why is she now coming out with a new album of songs under the Me'Shell Ndegeocello name?

``I'm just contractually obligated ob·li·gate

to do it,'' she says candidly.

As a matter of fact, she has indeed changed her name - to Bashir Shakur (which means ``one with the song'' and ``most thankful''), but she won't be using the new moniker (1) A name, title or alias. See alias.

 on tour.

``It would be a little difficult, since they've already marketed me as Me'Shell Ndegeocello,'' she notes.

Guess ``The Artist Formerly Known as Me'Shell Ndegeocello'' would really be out of the question.

The directing approach

If all goes as planned, LeVar Burton Levardis Robert Martyn Burton Jr. (born February 16, 1957, in Landstuhl, West Germany), professionally known as LeVar Burton, is an actor, director and author who first came to prominence playing Kunta Kinte in the 1977 award winning television miniseries Roots  will be making ``The Watsons Go to Birmingham'' with Whoopi Goldberg Whoopi Goldberg (born November 13, 1955) is an American actress, comedian, radio presenter, and author.

Goldberg is one of only ten individuals who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award, counting Daytime Emmy Awards.
and Alfre Woodard Alfre Ette Woodard (born November 8, 1952) is an American actress. She has been nominated for an Academy Award and has won four Emmy Awards, three SAG Awards and one Golden Globe Award.  this fall.

``I just got the second draft from the writers, and hopefully, it will prove to be everything we want it to be,'' says Burton, who's executive-producing and directing the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  telepic. He'll also play a small role in the film about a family that travels to Birmingham during the height of the civil rights movement in the '60s.

``The bookends of the movie are the two boys in the family who have grown up. I play one of the boys.''

Burton is juggling that project with ``At Water's Edge'' for Paramount TV. He's producing and will direct the telepic (``a wonderful story about family and forgiveness'') to which James Earl Jones is attached.
