SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  -- Brian Young was a student at Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura.  when he was inspired by a police officer who spoke at a school assembly, and in 2000 he joined the Simi Valley Police Department The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) is the police department of the city of Simi Valley, California. The department currently has over 120 sworn officers, and more than 65 support personnel[1]. The department has a patrol area that covers over 39 square miles. , eventually becoming a SWAT team member and part of the anti-gang unit.

This week, the department announced that Young, 28, was selected as the 2007 Officer of the Year, an award determined by his peers.

His selection "is well-deserved and a testament to the dedication and hard work that has marked the entirety of his seven-year police career," Police Chief Mike Lewis said.

In 2004, Young was honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is a nonprofit organization with more than 600 chapters nationwide. MADD seeks to find effective solutions to the problems of drunk driving and underage drinking, while also supporting those persons whose relatives and friends have been killed by drunk  for his efforts to enforce laws against drunk drivers. Six months ago, he was selected to work in the Special Problems Section, with the mission of anti-gang law enforcement.

," said Sgt. Darin Muehler, who supervises Young in the Special Problems Section. "He pretty much sets the standard for self-initiated activity, beating the bushes, doing old-school police work. When something doesn't look right, he digs a little deeper."

The Special Problems Section was involved recently in the arrest of a Simi Valley gang member in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man in January, and the arrest of another gang member in connection with the stabbing stab
