FOOTHILL SCRAMBLING; NEW VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE LINEUP CAUSING HEADACHES.

start for almost a year. It can't be delayed long enough for the Foothill League coaches.

Since Burbank dropped its team after this season ended, the league is left with just four schools - Canyon, Hart, Saugus and Valencia - for boys' volleyball.

As a result, the coaches of the remaining teams are unhappy about their future.

Right now, the plan is for the four schools to play each other three times, but no one likes that. Southern Section rules allow for a maximum of 20 regular-season matches. Tournaments count as two matches and teams can play in a maximum of three.

``It's a pain in the butt BUTT. A measure of capacity, equal to one hundred and eight gallons. Former Canyon coach Ardyce Masters, now the school's athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic , said the coaches have to make the calls if they want to change their position. She called the Southern Section some months ago and tried to find other teams or a league that would accept or join with the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  schools.

Now, she said it's not her place anymore.

``They need to do something about it,'' Masters said. ``That's how we got into the Golden League. I hounded them for a long time. I feel fortunate they had us for as long as they did. We were dominating the league.''

Estes said she didn't know it was her job to find a league. Plus, she considers boys' volleyball a lower priority than girls' volleyball.

``I take the girls' program more seriously. Until the schools in our leagues take it seriously, it won't change,'' she said.

The problems leading up to now began two years ago. Canyon, Hart and Saugus played in the Golden League, which became too crowded when Highland, Littlerock and Valencia started fielding varsity teams In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Burbank surprised everyone by starting a boys' team two years ago. Most had expected Burroughs, which has an Olympic volleyball player in Linda Murphy on its staff, to start first.

The league peacefully existed with five teams in boys' volleyball for the 1996 and '97 seasons. Then Burbank surprised everyone again by dropping its program.

Principal Ron Lipari said the school needed to be concerned with meeting Title IX gender-equity requirements. Burbank had three more boys' sports than girls' sports, so it dropped volleyball and will add girls' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  in the fall.

``By the way, we're still not equal,'' said Lipari, who wasn't the principal two years ago. ``Whoever decided to add it, I don't think it was appropriate.''

Burbank's exit from boys' volleyball angered Canyon coach Spencer MacCuish.

``This is atrocious,'' MacCuish said. ``When you have a program and you pull it to have girls' water polo, they didn't give volleyball a chance.''

This has left Burroughs as the source of hope with the Santa Clarita schools.

Murphy played on the 1960 Olympic team and has noticed an increase in interest since the 1984 Olympics Olympics Sports medicine An international competition among (traditionally) nonprofessional athletes trained in a particular summer or winter sport, which is held every 4 yrs in a selected city. See Paralympics, Special Olympics, World Medical Games. . More than once a month, Murphy said, she is asked about starting a program.

``When my classes are playing volleyball, kids come out of the weight room,'' Murphy said. ``They want to play, and they wonder why we don't have a boys' program.''

Burroughs, concerned with a lack of finances as well as Title IX, added girls' water polo last season.

``There's a lot of things we'd like to do, but the problem is right now we're overextended overextended,

,'' Burroughs principal Tim Buchanan said.

Murphy said it's up to the parents and students who want volleyball to voice their concerns to Buchanan. Buchanan said no one has said anything to him this year.

As for the Santa Clarita schools, Masters said Burbank didn't provide much challenge, so it won't be missed. Plus, she's glad the teams can still function as a league.

``At least the competition's decent,'' Masters said. ``It's not the end of the world

.''

Estes and Masters said they hope for a change in two years when the next round of releaguing begins.

Until then, who knows?

``Nobody's pushing for a viable league,'' Estes said. ``No one's thinking it's a big deal.''
