. But for history's sake, the Saugus swimmers felt they had something to do.

So Patterson took off on the final leg against Hart's Hayley Calams and came home with first place in the event, a record time of 3 minutes, 45.19 seconds, a first-ever team title and a small bit of vindication VINDICATION, civil law. ``I'm happy for our team, especially everyone else that graduated not beating Hart,'' Patterson said. ``I felt like we did it for everyone.''

After defeating Hart in dual meets the two previous years, Saugus finally claimed the championship it has chased for so long. Hart's girls never had lost a Foothill title since the league was formed.

``It's very exciting to know that you've got a horse race in this league now,'' Saugus coach Jim Klipfel said. ``I think it's going to stay that way for a while.''

Hart and Saugus went back and forth throughout the meet, with the Indians scoring an improbable victory by 0.01 seconds in the 200 freestyle relay. But it wasn't enough to keep the league's balance of power from shifting.

``That's what makes this meaningful,'' Klipfel said. ``Hart has been a great program for so long.''

On the boys' side, Hart took advantage of two strong swims by senior Kent Klawer, bothered by tendinitis tendinitis

in his right knee, and cruised to the team title ahead of second-place Burbank.

Klawer closed out his career with his seventh individual title in eight races at the league championships. He said his knee feels better in the water than when he walks around the pool deck, and it showed Thursday.

Despite barely swimming breaststroke during the past two weeks, Klawer smashed his own record in the 200 individual medley by nearly two seconds, winning in 1:55.29.

It was the same time Klawer posted at last year's Southern Section Div. I championships.

Klawer, who also won the 500 freestyle Wednesday, will now swim at next week's section finals in Long Beach with his confidence r finished sixth in the individual medley last May. The goal this season is to be in the top four.

``I wasn't exactly sure how (Southern Section) was going to turn out because I haven't done a whole lot in a couple weeks because of my knee,'' Klawer said. ``It's just great. Now I know I'm going to do well.''

Saugus freshman John Criste won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, the latter coming in a record time of 57.55. But Criste likely will swim the 200 individual medley instead of the butterfly at the section championships.

That would set up the first meeting this season between Criste and Klawer, club teammates with Canyons Aquatics and the present and future of local swimming. They will be joined by several top-flight swimmers from Orange County.

``I think it will be pretty interesting to see how our race turns out,'' Criste said.

The day's most dramatic victory went to Hart senior Shannon McCarthy in the 500 freestyle. Trailing for much of the race, McCarthy pulled in front of Valencia's Michelle Kroll after the final flip turn and touched her out by 0.04 seconds to win in 5:15.10.

``It's my senior year, I wanted to win,'' said McCarthy, whose time set a school record. ``I think I knew I had to have it.''

Something about swimming against each other brings out the best in McCarthy and Kroll. At a dual meet two weeks ago, McCarthy edged Kroll by 0.45 seconds to win as both clocked automatic qualifying times to the section championships.

``That's how it is between the two of us,'' McCarthy said. ``We both swim the same events and we both know how each other swims. We race really, really well together.''

They will not get a chance for a rematch REMATCH Cardiology Clinical trials–Randomized Evaluation of Mechanical Assistance Therapy as an alternative in Congestive Heart failure–related to use of a portable, electric left ventricular-assist system–LVAS–eg, HeartMate®  at the section championships, however. McCarthy said she will opt to swim the 100 backstroke instead of the 500 freestyle at the meet.

Saugus freshman Ryan Kristensen won the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while Canyon sophomore Roxy Camuso took first in the same events on the girls' side. Hart junior Goran Bistric, meanwhile, caught a tough break in the 100 backstroke.

his right shoulder despite winning in a time of 54.60. He also failed to break his older brother's record in the event, all due to the same injury that sidelined Bistric for four weeks during the season.

``It's killing me,'' Bistric said. ``It felt good until the second 50. I didn't see the flags and flipped Flipped (2002) is a young adult novel by Wendelin Van Draanen.
