for Thursday's Foothill League meet at Castaic Lake Castaic Lake is a lake on Castaic Creek formed by Castaic Dam, in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, near the town of Castaic. The 323,700 acre foot lake (399,000,000 m³) is the terminus of the West Branch of the California Aqueduct, though some comes from the 154 mi²  Park, the girls on the Canyon High cross country team were issued a challenge unlike any other from coach Dave DeLong.

Any number of them could win the race, DeLong said, but the true test would be if all seven varsity runners could cross the finish line together. It was the ultimate team goal in one of the most individual of sports.

In years' past, Canyon's teams were never able to accomplish the goal, with one or two runners falling behind and one or two breaking to the front. But Thursday, they crossed the line in one green pack, sweeping places No. 4-10 to win the team title.

``We'd already put in a couple of hard efforts the last two weeks,'' said DeLong, whose girls have won the past eight Foothill League championships. ``This gave them the chance to run as a team and have some fun.''

But the plan almost fizzled midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. Discovered by Americans in 1859, Midway was annexed in 1867. A cable station was opened in 1903.  through the race when junior Lauren Walker rolled her ankle and fell behind by about 20 yards. Junior Alysia Johnson, however, dropped back and helped bring Walker up front with the rest of Canyon's girls.

``When she went down, I just thought that I had to get (her) back up and help her finish,'' Johnson said. ``We were running as a team, and I wanted us to be successful.''

Walker ended up as Canyon's second-place finisher with a time of 19 minutes, 47 seconds. The entire Canyon team crossed the finish line within three seconds of each other. The credit went to senior Brenda Stevens and Johnson, who helped take care of the pacing.

--A lot of Hart: As senior Whitney Russell Whitney Russell Harris-Crane was a fictional character on the NBC soap opera Passions. Her birth year is 1982.  for the past three weeks and missed a week of training.

But Russell surprised her coach by storming down the final hill and finishing in first by 16 seconds over Burroughs of Burbank's Karolyn Brown. Russell's time of 19:17 was impressive, especially because she thought she was going to get sick before the race started.

``I just sucked it up and was focused,'' said Russell, who won the Foothill League championship as a freshman. ``I wanted to run a good time.''

Russell said she would see a doctor today.

--Varsity bound: The Saugus High coaches wanted to be cautious with freshman Chelsea Johnstone, so they assigned as·sign

her to run in the freshman/sophomore race Thursday. It was only Johnstone's second high school meet and the coaches wanted to give her a taste of competition her own age.

But Johnstone will be racing varsity from now on. She blew away her competition and finished in 19:09, a time good enough to beat Russell in the varsity race. She ran almost the entire race alone and in front, which posed a challenge.

``I just played mind games with myself,'' Johnstone said. ``I'd say, `You've got to get to the next hill,' or `You've got to get past that tree.' And then I saw the finish line and was pretty relieved.''
