``We just need to play our football and remain focused,'' Canyon quarterback Austin Civita said.

Civita gave a strong performance last week in a 49-21 victory over high-powered Valencia. He passed for 162 yards, ran for 92 and accounted for three touchdowns.

Civita's main job, as always, will be to get the football to J.J. DiLuigi, a junior who has rushed for 1,300 yards, caught 16 passes for 335 yards and scored a Canyon single-season record 35 touchdowns - 15 the past three games.

THIS WEEKEND'S GAMES (Friday unless noted)

VALENCIA (6-3) vs. SAUGUS (4-5), Friday, 7:30 p.m. at College of the Canyons

Player to watch: Michael Herrick, QB, Valencia. Herrick needs 254 yards passing to break Keith Smith's state record of 9,971, set in 1991-93 at Newbury Park. He needs 282 to crack the 10,000-yard barrier, an accomplishment achieved by just 20 prep quarterbacks nationally.

II leagues. If Saugus loses, the only Div. II team with a potentially better record while not finishing among the top three would be Diamond Bar (4-5-1), but Diamond Bar can finish in fifth place at best, so fourth-place Saugus likely would be chosen for the final spot.

Valencia was ranked as high as No. 2 in Div. II but has plummeted to No. 7 after losing two in a row, the second a 49-21 defeat to Canyon last week. Shane Vereen has rushed for 1,223 yards (9.1 avg.), caught 37 passes for 583 yards and scored 21 TDs, two on kick returns.

Saugus' top players are QB Zach Summers, WR Casey Stevenson and LB Ryan McKillop. Summers has passed for 1,035 yards and accounted for 16 TDs, Stevenson has 41 receptions and five TDs, and McKillop has a team-best 50 tackles.

GOLDEN VALLEY (1-8) vs. ST. GENEVIEVE of Panorama City (0-9) at Canyon HS, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Golden Valley, a seniorless freelance program, figures to have a good chance to finish with a victory against the winless Valiants.
