FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: SONG AND DANCE MAN : T.O.'S PORTILLA NOT YOUR AVERAGE QB.

Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

Two and a half years ago, Gabe Portilla organized and produced a fund-raiser called Broadway Cabaret cabaret

Restaurant that serves liquor and offers light musical entertainment. The cabaret probably originated in France in the 1880s as a small club that presented amateur acts and satiric skits lampooning bourgeois conventions.

.

It was quite an undertaking for a 15-year-old high school freshman but Portilla, with help from friends and family, accomplished the herculean task and raised $4,000 for pal Trevor Foster Trevor Foster MBE (1916 – April 2, 2005), was a Welsh rugby league footballer. Biography

Portilla didn't think about how much work it would take or how many hours he would have to labor, it was something the Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. ``At the time, I wasn't doing anything as far as acting,'' Portilla said. ``I called up some friends and we put together a show. We put it together really quickly, like in three months. It took a lot of time, but it was worth it.''

Portilla's acting exploits weren't limited to one night. He has starred in ``The King and I'' and ``The Wiz.''

He played the Crown Prince - Chula Long Corn - in ``King'' with Dale Kristien. Kristien, an acclaimed performer, was Christine in the initial Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  run of ``Phantom of the Opera.''

``It's just something that I like to do,'' said Portilla of his acting and singing. ``It's a lot of fun and a lot of work. You have to get things perfect because it's a live audience. You have rehearsals to get it right. There's nothing like performing in front of a live audience. You feed off their energy.''

Football is another love of Portilla and, like his stage and acting abilities, the senior has found his niche on the field.

Portilla, the Lancers' starting quarterback, helped Thousand Oaks reach the Southern Section Division IV playoffs in his only season as a starter. He will be at the helm Friday when the Lancers lanc·er

Much as a cast has to work together and the right people must be in the right place - or play the right character - the Lancers have inserted Portilla at quarterback and he has responded.

Portilla had experience coming in. He's played quarterback since age seven, when he participated in the youth football leagues of Woodland Hills. He helped the Conejo Cowboys to a championship in middle school and guided the freshman Lancers to the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``I think Gabe is a pretty good leader,'' senior tight end Chris D'Ascenzo said. ``I played with him on the Conejo Cowboys and as freshman and he's always been a winner.''

On this version of the Lancers, with a running tandem like Joey Casillas and Wes Cobos, Portilla has basically been asked to hand the ball off. His passing opportunities typically come at crucial times and Portilla is always ready.

``I know my role,'' Portilla said. ``But as a quarterback you have to be ready for anything.''

Portilla's pass to Jesse Siebers late in the fourth quarter helped Thousand Oaks earn a 31-31 tie with Westlake on Oct. 23.

This past week, Portilla played his best game when the Lancers' needed it most. He completed 9 of 15 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for three first downs and a two-point conversion In American football and Canadian football, a team may try to score a two-point conversion (score two points) instead of an extra point (one point) immediately after it scores a touchdown. .

after the game. ``He's done a nice job for us all year and he did a great job (in that game).''

The victory helped Thousand Oaks finish second in league.

Now Portilla and the rest of the Lancers will take their song and dance into the playoffs.
