C.R. Maldonado, a 5-foot-7, 148-pound senior, returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown last week in a 42-7 semifinal victory at Westlake.

The other guy, remember? With so many big names on Oaks Christian's roster, one of the team's steady but unpublicized defensive players is Brad Freeman, a three-year starter.

``Actually, Freeman came up when he was a freshman and started a few games for us when another guy got injured in·jure

But Brad Freeman is a good player.''

Freeman, an honor student who has 31 tackles and twosacks, has received interest from small colleges such as Appalachian State, Furman, SanDiego and UC Davis.

This one has a kick to it: Another unsung player is Canyon kicker Kicker

Not bad for starters: Birmingham's De'Von Flournoy, who has averaged 29.7 yards on 18 receptions heading into tonight's City Championship final against San Pedro, is in his first year of football, but didn't take long to make an impression.

``Oh, it took about half a practice on his first day for me to realize how good De'Von was going to be,'' quarterback James Beloff said.

Looking a little green? Canyon and Moorpark share the same green-and- gold color scheme, but Moorpark will wear its green jerseys and Canyon will wear white Saturday because Moorpark is the official home team.
