FOOTBALL: Dallas in line to handle Euro 2000 final.

HUGH DALLAS was last night given the dream news that he may be in line to take charge of the Euro 2000 final.

Scotland's top referee was one of the eight officials chosen by UEFA yesterday to stay on in Holland and Belgium as the tournament reaches its climax.

After being named as the fourth official for Sunday's quarter-final between France and Spain, Dallas is almost certain to be put in full charge of at least a semi-final.

It is widely expected here that the four quarter-final refs will not be given a subsequent match. That means Dallas is one of four men fighting it out for the right to referee the last three games. German Markus Merk, Gunter Benko from Austria and Sweden's Anders Frisk are also in the running.

Dallas said: "It does look good but I am one of life's pessimists and I'm not about to let my mind run away with itself and start thinking about a semi-final or the final itself."
