FOOD LION'S 1027 STORES IMPLEMENT A

SALISBURY, N.C., March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- President Bill Clinton has proclaimed the month of March, 1993, as Red Cross Month, and Food Lion's 1027 grocery stores in 14 states will be helping to raise funds for local Red Cross chapters using a coupon donation program. Food Lion (NASDAQ-NMS: FDLN), a company dedicated to community service and to helping the Red Cross, will make it possible for Food Lion customers to donate to the Red Cross at store check-out counters. Food Lion CEO Tom Smith states, "We at Food Lion are honored and excited to participate in fund-raising for the American Red Cross."
Food Lion will be implementing the program in all of its 1027 stores in 14 states, making this the most extensive use of the donation method by any company. Throughout the month of March, Food Lion customers will find special $1 coupons at store check-out counters. Customers who want to donate to the Red Cross simply tear off a coupon and present it to the Food Lion cashier. The cashier then adds $1 to the shoppers' final grocery total. Food Lion will present the Red Cross with a check for the total amount of donations received at the conclusion of the month- long campaign. The Red Cross will then distribute the funds among local Red Cross chapters. Tom Smith said, "This program is a continuation of our commitment to the American Red Cross and to the local communities in which Food Lion operates."
This is not the first time Food Lion has worked with the Red Cross. Immediately after Hurricane Andrew, Food Lion employees mobilized to aid Red Cross relief efforts. From baggers to check-out clerks to store managers, the employees worked together to organize a convoy of company owned tractor-trailers that would bring two million pounds of food and badly needed supplies to the hardest-hit areas. In September, Food Lion employees generously donated over $100,000 of their own money to help the hurricane disaster victims even though the company has no stores in the areas hit.
Food Lion is hoping to raise $500,000 in the 14 states where the company has grocery stores. David Crozier, Acting Director of Corporate Relations for the Red Cross, said, "The Red Cross is very grateful to have the Food Lion employees pulling for us during Red Cross Month. We congratulate Food Lion on their continuing dedication to community service."
The Red Cross would also like to thank Chesebrough-Pond's USA for generously donating all the printing services for the program.
