FOLLOWING IN HER FOOTSTEPS TOP-TEACHER SEMIFINALIST BECOMES CAREER ROLE MODEL.

Byline: Nicholas Grudin Staff Writer

GLENDALE - When Lisa Reed was in high school, she decided she wanted to follow in her math teacher's footsteps. Now, after 17 years as a teacher setting an example for her own pupils, Reed is an L.A. County semifinalist for the 2003 California Teacher of the Year award.

``I want to provide for my students what my teachers gave me: the sense that I could be successful and that I had choices,'' Reed said Tuesday as she prepared her classroom for today's start of the school year.

Perhaps nothing serves as better proof that Reed is accomplishing her goals than that her 1996 advanced-placement calculus calculus, branch of mathematics that studies continuously changing quantities. The calculus is characterized by the use of infinite processes, involving passage to a limit—the notion of tending toward, or approaching, an ultimate value.  student Edith Tanahan has been newly hired to teach math at Crescenta Valley High School Crescenta Valley High School is an secondary school located at 2900 Community Avenue in La Crescenta-Montrose, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The school is a part of the Glendale Unified School District.  in a room just down the hall from her former mentor.

``Lisa has always loved math, and she made me love it,'' Tanahan said, taking a break from adding the last touches to her own classroom's decor.

Last year, Tanahan taught at Woodrow Wilson High School There are numerous Wilson High Schools in the United States, most named after the United States President Woodrow Wilson, including:

She hopes to teach at Crescenta Valley High School for the rest of her career, thanks largely to Reed, she said.

Among the things Tanahan remembers best about her calculus class with Reed is the group project assignments.

``We always moaned and groaned about them, but in the end they were great,'' Tanahan said.

The projects help Reed demonstrate the practical value of math.

``One of the things my algebra students always say is, 'When are we ever going to use this?' I want to show them that they could use it for things that they are interested in,'' Reed said.

``She's been all over the state speaking about the CHSEE,'' said Gary Talbert, co-principal.

``The era in which a teacher can just be concerned with her own school is gone,'' Evans said. ``Lisa epitomizes the new era of teachers who must look at things on a statewide level.''
