Sunday as thousands turned out to listen to music from around the world while honoring slain journalist Daniel Pearl

The entertainment component this year was called ``A Taste of Folk Music.''

Held along Ventura at Encino Park and Encino Community Center, it celebrated cultures throughout the world and was one of a number of worldwide tributes to Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter from the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

``It's important to keep folk music alive because it's the people's tradition,'' said Elaine Weissman, executive director of the California Traditional Music Society, which organized the music festival.

It was also fitting, she said, that the daylong event honored Pearl, an accomplished fiddler, violinist and mandolin mandolin (măn'dəlĭn`, măn`dəlĭn'), musical instrument of the lute family, with a half-pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a variable number of strings, plucked with the fingers or with a plectrum.  player.

``Music creates harmony in the world. People communicate through music,'' she said, noting that Pearl's work helped shed light on other cultures.

The Daniel Pearl Foundation in Encino has organized more than 200 ``Harmony for Humanity'' concerts dedicated to Pearl in more than 30 countries.

The Encino event drew more than 12,000 people last year. Weissman said she expected this year's turnout to top that figure because the weather was cooler.

Pearl was kidnapped while on assignment in Karachi on Jan. 23, 2002. His death was confirmed nearly a month later.

For 73-year-old Louis Richter of Encino, dancing to folk music took him back farther than the months following the Sept. 11 attack when Pearl was killed.

``I dance for nostalgia,'' said Richter, who first learned Israeli folk dancing :''This article is about Israeli folk dancing. For the main article on Jewish dance, see Jewish dance. ``I like it because of the gentle, sweeping beautiful movements,'' said Richter.

Alan Pollack, of Woodland Hills, said it was important for a community to celebrate the folk music tradition.

``It's our history. It reflects our past,'' he said.l=8Grace Lee, (805) 662-6757
