FLYING THE FLAG FOR THE NORTH EAST.TOP beaches along our coast have scooped prestigious awards. Five beaches in the North East have been awarded Blue Flags for their clean sands. North Tyneside North Tyneside is a metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. Its seat is at the Town Hall, Wallsend. Created in 1974, the borough lies within the historic county boundaries of Northumberland. beaches at Whitley Bay Whitley Bay, town (1991 pop. 36,040), North Tyneside metropolitan district, NE England, on the North Sea. Formerly the urban district of Whitley and Monkseaton, Whitley Bay was chartered as a municipal borough in 1954. , Tynemouth Longsands South and Tynemouth King Edwards Bay were all awarded Blue Flags, with all three as well as Cullercoats Bay also winning Quality Coast Awards (QCAs). Coun Bruce Pickard, cabinet member with responsibility for cleaner neighbourhoods, said: "This is fantastic news for the thousands who enjoy our beaches every year. "That's because these awards are their guarantee that they're visiting beaches, which are clean and attractive places to relax or have fun. "I would like to thank all those who took part in recent community clean-ups of our beaches as part of our Big Spring Clean environment campaign. "People can continue to help our team right throughout the summer by leaving the beaches in the same condition they find them. This means taking litter home, recycling it or putting it in the bins provided." Roker beach in Sunderland regained its Blue Flag award after failing to win last year. In total there were nine Quality Coast Awards given to beaches along our shores which are well managed and pleasant for visitors, but where the water quality does not meet Blue Flag standards. This total was one more than last year. The annual awards are made by the Keep Britain Tidy Keep Britain Tidy is a British campaign run by the ENCAMS environmental charity, which is part funded by the U.K. government. The majority of their campaigning is around the issue of litter. They have been using 'Keep Britain Tidy' as their slogan for almost fifty years. campaign..
