The Loganair "school run" service will last until the end of the year, when the Golden Mariana ferry returns to service after being enlarged.

The children will stay overnight twice a week with families on Westray.

Loganair - now a franchise operator for Flybe - use two eight-seater Islander aircraft on the busy Orkney routes, with around 20,000 passengers making the short hop and flights to the capital Kirkwall each year.

But the loss of the ferry means four flights a week for the lucky children - and a change in the flight schedule to ensure they get to their lessons on time.

Westray has around 600 residents while Papa Westray is home to 70 people.

Loganair commercial director Jonathan Hinkles said: "The flight is listed in the Guiness Book of Records as the world's shortest.

"It is a popular tourist route for many visitors to Scotland but it is also a vital link for people who live or work in the Orkneys. It will make all the difference in ensuiring the children from Papa Westray can continue their schooling throughout the winter."

Acting head at Westray Junior High Willie McEwen said: "Our children will enjoy the flying especially at this time of year as it can be quite rough on the boat."

The flights will also cut journey times to and from school so the kids could even get a longer lie-in in the morning.

Many tourists target the flight because of its status as the shortest scheduled route in the world.

Immediately after take-off, the Islander aircraft has to begin its descent.

The Loganair flight also regularly ferries teachers between the islands in Orkney along with supplies such as food supplies, mail and newspapers.
