``This is an important step in the right direction,'' said Councilwoman Laura Chick, who had been pushing the proposal at the urging of the Valley business community.

``I was at the facility recently on a weekday and it was packed. I can only imagine what it is like on weekends and during holidays.''

Lydia Kennard, interim executive director, said the project is being put on a fast-track with construction to start in 2001 and be completed in time for the 2002 holiday season.

The FlyAway is located at 7610 Woodley Ave., Van Nuys. Round-trip fares are $6 for adults and $3.50 for those under the age of 12.
