FLUSHPOINT; Senator thumps businessman after argument in hotel's toilet.

A FIANNA Fail senator who attacked a businessman in the toilets of a hotel yesterday pleaded guilty to the assault.

Thomas James (Tommy) Wright (born 21 October 1944 in Liverpool) is a former footballer. He joined Everton F.C.
 he would shut him up before punching him and leaving him with a swollen face, Mullingar District Court was told.

The 67-year-old politician attacked Mr Wright after a row erupted between the two men in the bathroom of the Annebrook Hotel in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, at 2am on May 25.

Senator Glynn, in a statement read out in court, said: "Mr Wright said to me, 'What is a low life like you doing in a place like this?'"

Senator Glynn then lashed out punching Mr Wright who was taken to the Mullingar General Hospital and was released several hours later.

The veteran politician told the court he was deeply apologetic for his actions and sincerely regretted them.

Judge John Neilan said because of the senator's decision to plead guilty and his previous good record he would apply the Probation of Offenders Act.

The senator, who told the court he had been involved in public life for 29 years, said he would pay the money to the Mullingar branch of St Vincent de Paul.
