FLUORIDE SUIT BRUSHED ASIDE; CITIZENS GROUP GIVEN CHANCE TO REFILE.

Byline: Peter Hartlaub Daily News Staff Writer

A Sherman Oaks-based group's attempt to block the city from adding fluoride fluoride, a salt of hydrofluoric acid; see hydrogen fluoride. See also fluoridation; fluorine.  to tap water was at least temporarily thwarted Friday when a Superior Court judge threw out its lawsuit against the City Council.

But the judge gave Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Citizens for Safe Drinking Water drinking water

at least one chance to refile the suit in time to protest the plan to begin adding fluoride to drinking water in August.

The council approved the plan Jan. 19, in an effort to comply with a state law requiring fluoride treatment in an effort to fight tooth decay Tooth Decay Definition

With more than 100 of the group's supporters in court, some spilling into the hall, Superior Court Judge John Reid John Reid may refer to:
  • John Reid (soldier) (born 1721), a British general and musical composer, who left a bequest to fund a chair in Music at the University of Edinburgh
  • John Dowsley Reid (1859-1929), a Canadian parliamentarian and Cabinet minister
  • John C. W.
 criticized their court papers.

``What is the purpose in this lawsuit?'' Reid asked.

Reid said it was unclear whether the group's intent was punitive toward the city or to challenge the state law.

Los Angeles Citizens for Safe Drinking Water claims that the City Council didn't give the public enough notice before making its final vote on the issue, and didn't take a close enough look at safety data.

Members of the group want the government to conduct more tests, and fear that the fluoride could cause cancer, genetic damage and neurological impairment.

Reid dismissed the lawsuit, but gave the group 20 days to fix it and refile.

After the setback in court, members of the group rallied outside the courthouse. Spokesman Paul Borraccia said new documents from the City Council and the DWP DWP Department of Work and Pensions (UK)
DWP Drinking Water Program
DWP Dynamic Weapon Pricing (gamin, Counter-Strike: Source)
DWP Department of Water & Power
DWP Drinking Water Protection
will be added to the revised lawsuit, and he expects the judge to change his mind.

``Our complaint is simply going to get stronger and stronger,'' Borraccia said. ``This is the beginning of the end of fluoridation fluoridation (flr'ĭdā`shən), process of adding a fluoride to the water supply of a community to preserve the teeth of the inhabitants. , and it's going to start here in Los Angeles.''

Outside court, Assistant City Attorney David Hotchkiss said the city doesn't have the right to defy the state decision, which was made after looking into all safety issues.

``More than 60 percent of the nation has been fluoridated,'' he said. ``It's a safe chemical that is going to have benefits for our children and our adults.''

Verna Diot, a Northridge resident who attended the rally, said she's not sure fluoride is a good idea.

``It's really just mandatory mass-medication,'' Diot said. ``The people who want it can get adequate amounts in their toothpaste or from their dentist.''
