Floyd, 50, is getting paid $1.5 million this season and next season by the Hornets, who fired him in May. A settlement on the remainder of his contract is the only detail preventing Floyd from officially becoming the Trojans' coach next year.

``If it works out, he will take the job,'' a source said. ``It could be settled fairly soon.''

The Hornets and Floyd must reach an agreement that would be financially viable for Floyd, who essentially is being paid for not working.

One source said Floyd's hiring could officially be announced by the end of the week. The Christmas holiday weekend could delay things until next week.

``There aren't really any issues on USC's end,'' a source said.

Floyd would replace Rick Majerus Rick Majerus (born February 17 1948 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin) is the men's basketball head coach at Saint Louis University. He has coached at Marquette University from 1983 to 1986, Ball State University from 1987 to 1989, and University of Utah from 1989-2004. , who claimed less than a week after he was announced as Trojans coach that he is not fit enough for the job. Floyd was 41-41 last season with the Hornets before he was fired.

It's his college record that most impressed USC. Floyd was 81-49 in four years at Iowa State, and he was the first coach in Cyclones history to win 20 games three successive seasons.

Floyd guided Iowa State to the Sweet 16 in 1996-97, finishing the season 22-9. Floyd also posted a 127-58 record at New Orleans, where he won at least 20 games in six of his eight seasons.

Floyd also coached the Chicago Bulls for about three seasons (1998-2001), taking over the team following the departure of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. The Bulls were 49-190 under Floyd.

Although several other names were floated, Floyd is the only coach USC seriously considered after Majerus changed his mind about the job. Majerus cited fitness issues, but sources said he was disenchanted dis·en·chant

Floyd's hiring would meet senior associate athletic director Daryl Gross' goal of making a hire before he leaves in late January to become athletic director at Syracuse.
