Southland parks and flower gardens came alive Wednesday with the colors and smells of cherry blossoms

Although it was a weekday, temperatures near 80 and sunny skies brought out legions of families, couples and singles to local parks. They took brisk walks, hit the playground, or stretched out and had a picnic and nap.

``This is great,'' said Encino resident Thomas Rossberger, 34, as he stood on the concrete-lined bank of Lake Balboa, casting his fly-fishing line into the water.

``I talked to my mom in Minnesota today. There's 2 feet of snow. I told her, It's 75 degrees - I'm going fishing.''

With pink Japanese cherry blossoms providing a backdrop to Beilenson Park Lake Balboa in Encino, Nora Marks sat with her caretaker, Ofelia Henry, 41, under the shade of a tree. The two drove from Valencia for some fresh air.

``This is like sitting near the ocean,'' Henry said. ``It's a beautiful day.''

In the parking lot under a tree, Emily Owens, 37, of Pacoima sat in her car listening to radio host Joyce Brown Joyce Patricia Brown (perhaps better known as Billie Boggs) was a mentally ill homeless person who defeated New York City's efforts to force her into a psychiatric treatment program.  give advice to the lovelorn.
